This chapter focuses on the role of working forests in restoring ecosystem services and the leadership needed to make PES and other policy solutions work to protect a critical resource in a developing country, the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. The chapter is placed in the section in Volume II of “Environmental Leadership: A Reference Handbook” on Taking Action in the Face of Scientific Uncertainty.

I know many of you know only too well how huge this challenge is and how important it is that we break new ground addressing the subject. This is why I wanted to share with you this book, which might help you, I hope, become familiar with my research and the views of a number of scholars that will further stimulate the discussions addressing environmental politics and sustainability.

It would not have been possible to conduct the research or to publish the chapter without the support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Gund Institute for Environment (especially, for Prof. Joshua Farley) and Sage Publications Ltd. (in particular their Editor, Prof. Deborah Rigling Gallagher).
